The 1984 Winter Olympics took place in Sarajevo, in former Yugoslavia (today Bosnia and Herzegovina). It was the first Winter Olympic Games held in a socialist state after many countries boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Although the Olympic Village in Sarajevo is abandoned today, it inspires artists and urban explorers. One of them is Joerg Daiber of Little Big World. Using a drone and a tilt-shift effect, he shot a timelapse of the grandiose venue in an unexpected way – he turned it into a miniature....

I don’t remember people complaining more about Instagram ever since its algorithm-based Feed replaced the chronological one. But it looks like users are fed up with the app’s efforts to become a poor copy of TikTok. So fed up, in fact, that it made Instagram ditch the changes it’s been making to the app recently. Or at least they’re ditching them until the dust settles. In an interview with The Verge, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri talked about the changes to the app he also addressed in the video a few days ago....

Without a doubt, the Canon EOS R5 is the top image-maker of 2020 and could potentially go unmatched in the camera world for another few years. It is the first full frame mirrorless camera to offer 8K video capability and features a specs sheet that puts it at the top of its class. The EOS R5 directly answers many of the concerns that photographers had with the EOS R and promises significant updates to important functions including autofocus, stabilization, continuous burst shooting, and video....

Here at the photography blogosphere, a few blogs picked up on a tweet from Krita@mastodon.art calling Adobe out for having a policy that allows them to use users’ photos stored on the cloud to train its AI systems. Since then, Adobe has released a statement to Peta Pixel telling that they do not use users’ data for Experimental Generative AI features. I am not an attorney, but I can see at least two reservations here with the words “Experimental” and “Generative”....

Today marks the 90th birthday of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to record the occasion, celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz was chosen to create portraits of the Queen and her family. While Annie is no stranger to photographing The Queen, their last professional interaction didn’t seem to go too well at all, and given their attitude towards some photographers, even if they might deserve it, it seems slightly surprising that Annie would be invited back for such a major event....

Apple has recently issued a warning for all MacBook users not to close their laptops while the camera cover is on. The problem it might cause isn’t naïve at all: your MacBook screen might crack. I personally know many people who use camera covers for a variety of reasons. However, it appears that this has created a problem for a number of MacBook users, so Apple had to issue an official warning....

Well, this is a bit of a change of pace for Aputure. While they’ve released many lights under the main Aputure name as well as the Amaran brand over the years, the new Amaran SM5c seems to be more comfortable in the smart home sector than the filmmaker or creative sector. It’s essentially a 5-metre addressable (or “Smart Pixel” as Aputure calls it) RGB LED strip. Aputure says it’s designed for creators to cater to “a new subset of consumers”....

We often hear smartphones are to blame for the massive decline in camera sales over the last few years. And while they have no doubt played a major part for a lot of general consumers, is it really enough to see the huge drops we’ve seen? Photographer Robin Wong isn’t so sure. Well, GoPro might be out of the drone game, but it looks like challengers are stepping up to take on DJI. First there was Yuneec’s new Typhoon H Plus, and now Autel Robotics have announced their new EVO; A compact folding drone to take the DJI Mavic Pro head on. Boasting a 30 minute flight time, the EVO contains all the features we’d hope to find in a competitive drone today....

There’s no word on exactly when Nikon will officially announce that the D6 is done, dusted and going to be shipping, although it’s expected sometime in early 2020, possibly around February. They have so far made a “development announcement” stating that they’re working on it, and that it’s going to be coming at some point, but that’s about it. Ahead of an official release announcement, though, it looks like B&H are already trying to clear their shelves of Nikon D5 bodies....

Until this year, B&H only collected sales tax in New York and New Jersey, the only two states where B&H had a physical presence. Animals stealing cameras is quite entertaining. They don’t really do it on purpose. They often just mistake it for something else. Food, usually, or… a mate. Sometimes they are just curious. This particular footage, though, shows an animal one doesn’t often interact with. Bald eagles. On this particular occasion, glacial researcher Matt Beedle was in Juneau, Alaska. Photographing the eagles from afar, he attempted to coax them in to land with some scraps of left over salmon....

BlackRapid has launched a new shoulder sling camera strap especially for female photographers. The Nicole Elliott strap aims to reduce the pressure on your neck and shoulders and to do it with style. But the inspiration for the strap has raised some eyebrows (including mine). The company emphasizes that “the way women have been carrying their babies for centuries” is what inspired the design of the camera strap for ladies....

A Pennsylvania bride was shocked to receive her wedding images to find that “crazy eyes” had been photoshopped onto anyone who was blinking. Anaya Ramos-Bridgeford had been excited about viewing the images from her wedding but was left in hysterics when she spotted the error. Anaya subsequently posted the offending photos to Facebook giving pretty much the entire world a good laugh. It turned out, however, that the fault wasn’t that of her wedding photographer, but of the editing company he had outsourced the retouching to....

We are witnessing the rapid improvement of smartphone cameras (and more of them being added to each new phone that gets launched). But have we come to the point where smartphone cameras can take better photos than full-frame DSLRs? Tyler Stalman tested the iPhone XR against the Canon 5D Mark IV. And when it comes to dynamic range – the smartphone sure does a pretty impressive job! Smartphones and DSLRs have been compared numerous times, and they’re evidently getting better....

With all of the rampant excitement around the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k (BMPCC4k as if that’s easier). The one question on everyone’s mind is: Can the BMPCC4K replace cinema cameras? Can it REALLY be compared to an Arri Alexa or cameras of that caliber? To which the answer is obviously: No. However, it’s not that simple, there are so many complex questions and answers which put this (not really pocket-sized) tiny cinema camera back on the table for discussion....

It seems that Canon is really on fire today with the announcements. Along with the PowerShot G7 X Mark III and the G5 X Mark II, the company is also announcing the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM lens. If you’ve already bought the Canon EOS RP full frame camera, this lens could be a pretty neat addition to your kit. The new Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM was rumored back in February, along with five other lenses....

Canon is notorious for not having any kind of in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), preferring to go with stabilisation in the lens, instead. This fact came to head with the release of the EOS R and EOS RP mirrorless cameras which also didn’t feature any kind of IBIS – which the Sony, Nikon, Panasonic and other mirrorless alternatives do. They say they’re working on it and that it’s coming to a future EOS R model....
