Sky replacements are fairly common in photography these days. Not everybody is shooting a camera with a wide enough dynamic range to always capture a well-exposed subject without a blown out sky. Or, perhaps the sky on the day you were shooting is just a bit boring. Typically, we take to Photoshop to do the sky replacement and blend it in with our foreground scene. Luminar 4, though, is coming with a new AI Sky Replacement feature, first mentioned last month....

Sony is taking no prisoners. In their latest mid-term strategy paper, they pledge almost a 1 Trillion Yen (~$9 billion) investment into camera technology over the next three years. The investment is primarily in image sensors, with the goal of becoming the “top brand in the overall camera market” by 2021. With Canon’s recent announcement to take more than 50% of the interchangeable lens camera market in the next few years, things should get exciting....

Images of AI-generated humans aren’t exactly a new concept. But now, they’re available for licensing for the first time ever. VAIsual and PantherMedia have announced the availability to legally license 100% synthetically generated stock images. VAIsual is a technology company pioneering algorithms and solutions to generate high-quality synthetic media. It was founded by Michael Osterrieder and Nico Menijes, along with business industry veterans Istvan Novak and Mark Milstein. In collaboration with Germany’s leading microstock photo agency Panther Media GmbH, the company is now offering licensable images of AI-generated humans....

Astronomy Photographer of the Year usually shares the annual winners in September. It’s a long way from now, but there’s another treat for astrophotography fans out there: people’s choice. The contest has just published the People’s Choice Winners for 2021, and as always – they’re absolutely gorgeous. The overall 2021 winner and the category winners were announced last year, with Chinese photographer Shuchang Dong selected as Astronomy Photographer of the Year....

Summer’s here, and with it comes sunburn and redness. This redness becomes particularly obvious in photographs. Sometimes, if it’s photographs of our friends, we’ll leave them looking like a lobster so we can make fun of them. But often it’s a client, or other subject that we actually want to be pleased with the way they look in the photograph. A resort village of Bergün/ Bravuogn in Switzerland recently implemented quite an unusual ban. The local council has announced that, from now on, it’s forbidden to take photos of this picturesque village. Anyone who gets caught taking pictures will be issued a symbolic fine of 5 CHF (around $5), and the reason – they want to stop people from feeling miserable. “What sense does it make,” you may ask. According to the Facebook post on the resort’s page, “it is scientifically proven that beautiful holiday photos shared on social media cause the viewers to feel miserable because they are not in that place....

A 17-year-old boy was killed by a train in Troutdale, Oregon on Saturday evening. According to multiple reports, the tragedy happened while he was taking his senior photos near the Troutdale Bridge. Oregon Live reports that the teenager was hit by a Union Pacific train. Just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, Multnomah County Sheriff deputies responded to a call, according to a statement. Unfortunately, they reportedly found the boy dead at the scene....

If you own a drone, you know that moving it around could be quite challenging. While most drones feel solid, the propellors never seem to be quite safe :) I got to play with the DJI Spark for a bit and aside from being a modern miracle of technology, it demanded some friends. The first of which was a bag (or a case). I did not get lazy and took the Spark to a store and pretty much tried ALL the bags they had....

When Karen Alsop started The Christmas Wish Project, she wanted to bring the Christmas spirit to children’s hospital beds around Australia. Along with many volunteers, this photographer and digital artist has brought smiles back on the faces of many sick children. The project has been growing every year, it went global in 2018 – and now you can join it, too. Karen and her team are running workshops around Australia to train up new volunteers for future projects....

It’s amazing how many people never look up. The skies can be many things to a photographer – a backdrop, a light source, a diffuser. Sometimes just a nice source of teal for your orange foreground. When you decide to use the skies for your subject, especially the night skies, the very first thing you are going to notice is the moon. There are some very beautiful objects in the night sky, and the thrill of using the camera to see what your eyes can’t see is enormously rewarding....

I was listening to my favourite band Sentenced and their album “The Cold White Light”. While listening I started thinking “Should I make images from the songs in my favourite album?”. Well, that was the original plan in February 2020. Now ideas have gone on their way and I have over forty sketches in my sketchbook. I have picked some pieces from other bands too like Queen, Metallica, Mötorhead, Stam1na… When ideas started to circulate I ended up pretty quickly in the idea that all the images would have the same environment....

You can tell Photokina’s coming. The announcement rumours are coming through thick and fast right now. Since the Nikon Z6/Z7 announcement, we’ve seen full frame mirrorlesss announcement rumours for Canon and Panasonic. And we’ve already seen one from Fuji for the impending X-T3. But it looks like Fuji has another trick up their sleeve. The Fujifilm GFX 50R, a new “affordable” medium format mirrorless camera. Fuji Addict reports that it’s expected to be announced on September 23rd, and the first photo of the new camera has been leaked on Weibo....

This is interesting for your iOS folks. There’s a new Kickstarter in town for something called the HyperCube. It’s an interesting little device that sits in between your phone’s charger cable and the USB socket and provides a microSD slot as well as a USB slot for plugging in a hard drive, SSD or flash drive. When it hits retail (which won’t be for a while), it’s going to be $49, although it’s as low as $29 right now through the Kickstarter campaign....
