Do you ever get that creepy feeling that you’re being watched? It may sound like you’ve watched too many scary movies but you may actually be onto something. That is, if you own a robot vacuum cleaner or any other smart homeware devices. A recent report discovered that images taken by Roomba vacuums had been shared to social media by workers hired to monitor the images. Some of the images sparked privacy concerns and showed a young woman sitting on the toilet, and others showed young children inside their homes....

Samsung has introduced a variable aperture in mobile photography and put a triple camera setup in a mid-range phone. The company is soon launching the next flagship model Galaxy S10, and the camera specs have just leaked. A few sources have confirmed that S10 will have a triple rear camera, so this setup is not reserved for the recently launched A7 only. Reportedly, there will also be an S10+ model which will pack five cameras in total: three on the back and two on the front....

If you needed more proof that the world was going nuts, it seems that Samsung is working on 600-megapixel sensors. In an editorial post on the Samsung website, Yongin Park, Head of Sensor Business Team stated they’re prepared to “ride the next wave” of tech innovation, and is determined to produce sensors with higher resolution than the human eye. In just the past couple of years, we’ve already seen smartphone sensors make what seemed at the time to be a ridiculous leap to 64-megapixels, followed up very quickly by 108-megapixels, and a 150-megapixel 1″ Samsung sensor was rumoured to be in the works just last month....

It seems that the Israeli smartphone camera tech company Corephotonics is being snapped up by electronics giant, Samsung, according to GSMArena. It’s a deal estimated to be worth around $150,000,000 and should see Samsung acquiring some pretty cool smartphone camera tech. Corephotonics has been working to overcome the shortcomings of tiny sensors placed inside phones. Issues like noise levels, low light performance, zoom, and optical stabilisation. Corephotonics developed the 5x lossless zoom camera module found in the OPPO smartphone....

Australian satirist, comedian, writer, and artist Bryan Dawe found himself in the middle of a scam that sounds too terrible to be true. In spring last year, he stumbled upon a Facebook post from a “photographer” who was collecting money for her “broken camera.” Dawe wanted to land a hand, organizing a fundraiser for the woman who posed as the photographer who had her camera destroyed. The whole thing turned out to be a scam....

The winning images from the Storm Photo of the Year Awards have been announced. All the images were taken over the course of 2021, and the competition is divided into three categories: Photo of the Year, Tornado Photo of the Year and Photographer of the Year. The first two sought to find the most incredible, single photos taken from the prior year in their respective categories. And the third (portfolio) award looked to recognize the achievement of putting together an amazing set of 10 images taken in 2021....

Ever since high speed sync was introduced to speedlights, I’ve seen questions about metering it. Up until now, it’s pretty much been impossible to judge with a handheld meter. You basically have to just go off your histogram. Now, that’s all changed. Originally announced at Photokina in September, Sekonic’s L-858D light meter is now getting into peoples hands. Being able to meter high speed sync should start to put an end to the debates over just how much power is lost once you go past your sync speed....

The Brenizer method has been around for a while. In fact, it’s been around since long before it was called the “Brenizer method” – he was just the guy who made it popular so the name stuck. Essentially it’s a way to simulate the look of medium format film when shooting a small sensor camera like an APS-C or full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera. Two police officers in Georgia were fired after videos showing them brutally beating a motorist spread like a wildfire on social media. A criminal investigation has been initiated over their conduct, and photos of the two officers have emerged in the media. The official police portraits from the Gwinnett County Police paint a radically different personae than the actions of Sgt. Michael Bongiovanni and Officer Robert McDonald caught on video....

When we talk about the Shutter Speed in photography the first thing that comes to mind is its is relationship to Exposure. The Shutter speed is the essential part of Exposure Triangle (Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed) and it helps photographers to get perfectly exposed photos. But my belief is that to understand and to master Shutter Speed for taking the perfectly exposed images is the easiest part of the equation....

Sigma first introduced a 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary lens quite a while ago. It’s an affordable yet powerful zoom lens, but it has been available only in Canon EF, Nikon F and Sigma SA mounts. Judging from recently leaked images, Sigma is soon launching a new version of the lens, and it will be available for Sony FE mount, too. Sony Alpha Rumors obtained two images showing the new Sigma 100-400mm F5-6....

Sigma Global has announced an “Online New Product Presentation” set for April 27th. Given some recent Tweets from Nokishita, it looks like it’s going to be the official announcement for the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art series lens for Panasonic and Sony mirrorless systems. They’ve leaked some of the specs for the new lens, along with a price, stating that it’s been added to some overseas retailers already. Surprisingly, there don’t appear to be any product photos of the actual lens yet, which is designed for Leica L mount and Sony E mount systems and expected to cost $899, but no doubt they’ll start to pop up in the next few days....

Popular lens (and camera) manufacturer Sigma has said that they are going to be giving priority to their DN line of mirrorless system lenses, going forward. A tweet posted by Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki confirmed this, stating that while the primary focus will be on DG DN full-frame mirrorless lenses, they will also be working on DC DN lenses for APS-C and Micro Four Thirds. The translated tweet reads… Sigma currently produces more than 50 lenses, for many different brands and systems including Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax as well as their own Sigma cameras....

At this year’s IFA trade show in Berlin, German website Slashcam spotted a lens that filmmakers among you might find interesting. It’s SIRUI 50mm/F1.8 1,33x Anamorphot lens, an anamorphic lens designed for APS-C Sony E and Fuji X, as well as Micro 4/3 cameras. For now, there isn’t too much information about the upcoming lens. All we know is that it will be available as native Sony E, Fuji X, and MFT mounts....

It’s amazing how far sensor technology’s come in the last few years. We’ve had dual pixel autofocus, ultra high ISOs, and a whole bunch of other cool features show up. Phones and bigger camera sensors get more and more powerful with each new generation. This sensor from Sony, though, might be one of the most exciting yet. Sony have developed a way to speed up the data acquisition in a CMOS sensor....

Simplify. Back to basics. Classic. Timeless. You see, the biggest criticism I find myself offering to students and friends of mine is to simplify an image. Most importantly, the background. People seem to enter this state of mind where they lock a camera lens down to 1.2 or 1.4 etc and shoot the model or subject anywhere and everywhere as long as the light looks great on them. “Once the background is blurry it’s all gravy!...

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across a video on Facebook by the people at Campus Univers Cascades in France, an educational centre specialised in training stunt techniques for cinema and TV. It shows a bunch of stuntmen and women having a virtual fight from their respective homes, and the final result is both brilliant and hilarious. With most movie and TV sets around the world shut down due to the coronavirus, it’s a great and fun way for them to keep showing off their talents....

This weekend, I took a photo walk with my cousin, who is also a professional photographer. We were joking about a bottle of nail polish in a mesh pocket of her camera bag. “Have you ever considered writing an article about the content of a girl’s camera bag?” she asked. “As a matter of fact, I have.” I’d totally forgot about it, and I’m glad that she reminded me. You know, it’s always fun for me to find out what other photographers use for the job....

I always love watching how things are made, especially the tools that man of us use on a daily basis. So, when I see a new video pass my screen showing the inner workings of the production line, I’m fascinated. In this video, we take a look inside the Hocus Products factory. This is where they assemble all the components for their $2,000 Reflex follow focus by hand. And I’m not just talking about putting motors in a case, either....

Advertisements The overall winner of the contest is French Photographer Greg Lecour with his stunning shot Frozen Mobile Home. It depicts a giant iceberg surrounded by crabeater seals. The jury selected the winner from tens of thousands of photos submitted by photographers from 156 countries. I believe it was quite a task! Siena International Photography Awards is followed by an annual photography festival.
