In an ideal world, we’d either be able to hold the gimbal with one hand and easily move the focus wheel manually with the other or we’d just have a separate focus puller to deal with it for us so we can concentrate on the composition. How stupid people can act just to get photos probably shouldn’t surprise me anymore, but it still does. A French family recently visited Beekse Bergen safari park in the Netherlands, where they got out of the car to take photos of cheetahs. And the big cats acted naturally: they started chasing the family because they were invading their territory. A person who was in a car behind the French family filmed the entire incident....
According to a Twitter post from Nokishita, Sigma is getting ready to announce three new lenses. They’re DG DN lenses, designed specifically for Sony E and Leica L mirrorless mount cameras. The news comes by way of leaked product photos of each of the three lenses, but other than that, there’s not much info to go on just yet. On 26 May current year, eight climbers went missing in the Indian Himalayas. Sadly, seven of them were found dead 20 days later, presumably by triggering an avalanche. A recently recovered GoPro footage shows what could have been their last minutes before the tragic event. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police released the footage they recovered after finding the climbers. It shows the group moving slowly towards the unnamed peak near the Nanda Devi, India’s second highest mountain....
Recently I had the opportunity to test the new Fuji X-T2. At start, it was only possible to do some tests with natural light and mainly in the street. Let’s face it, everything looks good on a 3″ screen. So, the advantages of shooting tethered become immediately apparent in the studio. You’re able to quickly see the results as you shoot them on a much larger screen. This makes it much easier to spot distracting elements, issues with hair or makeup, and if the composition even works when shown big. Until recently, if you were a Fujifilm X-Series camera owner, your options for fast prime lenses (f/1.4 or wider) were limited to (relatively) expensive options from Fujinon, or less expensive third-party manual focus lenses. Fujifilm has recently opened its autofocus protocols, and we can expect more third-party autofocus fast prime lenses soon. Until then, Viltrox has filled the gap of autofocus fast primes with their reverse-engineered 23, 56, and 85mm f/1....
Something quite special dwells beneath the surface of New Zealand and these images prove that the country is just as beautiful below ground as it is above! The Waitomo area is famous for it’s limestone caves and within these caves are one of the most magical insects in the world, the glowworm. Glow worms emit a phosphorescent glow that light up the cave and create a surreal environment. Over the past year I have been back and forth to Waitomo’s Ruakuri Cave to master the art of photographing these magnificent little creatures – it’s been quite the experience!...
Google, it seems, is acquiring Lytro. Yes, the company that made that crazy light field camera and then got out of photography to move into VR and cinema is being snapped up. In a deal which TechCrunch report to be worth either $40mil or $25mil, depending on who you ask, Google will pick up the company in an “asset sale”. Presumably, this will include the 59 patents related to light-field and imaging technology which Lytro owns....
Google’s Gcam research team focuses on computational photography. They develop the algorithms that assist in shooting photos with smartphones and other small cameras. When one of the team’s then researchers, Florian Kainz, went out to shoot under a full moon with a high end DSLR. He got one photograph he was particularly proud of, so took it into work. His teammates challenged him to recreate the image with a phone....
GoPro, like many companies, tends to keep pretty quiet when it comes to new products, letting very little out until an official announcement is ready to be made. Official news, therefore, on the GoPro Hero5 is pretty much non-existent, although the rumours and speculation are plentiful. GoPro CEO, Nick Woodman recently told Christian Times that they will “definitely release three new devices before the year ends”, but he did not specify what these products would be, or when they would be getting released....
