During yesterday’s announcements for the Sigma 20mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens for Leica L and Sony E mount cameras, one of the live presentations in Japanese included a question and answers session where Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki was asked if their lenses would come to more camera mounts. He confirmed that Sigma is looking to add at least one more mount to their mirrorless lens lineup in 2022. He didn’t clarify which mount it could be, but there aren’t really many options out there. There’s Leica L, Sony E and MFT that Sigma already covers and Nikon Z, Canon RF and Fuji X, which they don’t. I suspect it probably won’t be that last one. Sure, it’s a popular mount, but I think they’ll target the full-frame systems where there still aren’t many 3rd party options first.

It’s an obvious question to ask, really. There’s a distinct lack of Sigma glass on both of the other full-frame mirrorless systems out there – Nikon Z and Canon RF – and those who’ve jumped from Nikon F to Z and Canon EF to RF no longer have those native mount lens options from Sigma. Sure, they can keep using their F and EF glass with their new Z and RF cameras by using an adapter, but given the performance increases we’ve seen from Sigma’s L and E mount lenses over their DSLR-version predecessors, it makes sense that Nikon and Canon mirrorless shooters want new native glass, too. In response, he said that “as a lens maker, I want to support as many mounts as possible” and that basically, Sigma’s working on it. He also said that they “might be able to add […] at least one more mount” during 2022. He didn’t specify which mounts Sigma was working on (presumably all of them) or prioritising, but sounded confident that they might figure out a way to bring at least one of them to market this year. The wording used suggests that there is perhaps also a slim chance that we may see more than one come in 2022. Whatever mount (or mounts) it ends up being, he says we will hear an official announcement when the time is right. Until then, we’ll just have to keep waiting. Personally, I’m hoping they start showing MFT some love again – especially as it’s a mirrorless system they already made a few lenses for with a mount that hasn’t changed and isn’t going to change in the near future. It’ll be nice to see Sigma’s recent DG DN glass come to Nikon Z and Canon RF but personally, I just wish they’d throw a little more love the way of Micro Four Thirds. They’ve already made a few for MFT, so they know how it works and it’s not likely to change any time soon. Although, I suppose for stills shooters, not having access to Panasonic’s Depth From Defocus (DFD) focus system does put them at a disadvantage for many MFT shooters.
