Sony has now released the Mac version of its Imaging Edge Webcam software, which allows you to use thirty six of Sony’s A & E mount interchangeable lens cameras and fixed lens cameras as webcams on your computer. Sony first released the software back in August, but it was only available for Windows at that time. The list of compatible cameras hasn’t changed since the initial Windows release, but offers benefits for both newer as well as older (you hear that, Panasonic?) cameras.
The new Mac version of the software supports macOS 10.13-10.15, and Sony notes to make sure that all your drivers have been updated to the latest versions. They also say that even though an operating system might be supported, the software is not guaranteed to run on all computer configurations. The instructions to set it all up and run it are available here, but it’s essentially a case of connecting your camera to your computer via a USB cable and running the software. Some cameras are a little bit funny, though, requiring you to put them into Auto mode when you load the software and then switching to movie mode after it’s running. But it’s better than not being able to use your camera as a webcam. There are still some devices, like the original Sony A7 and A6000 that aren’t supported, however, you could still use these as a webcam with a regular $15 USB HDMI capture device without requiring any other software.
