Major changes have occurred at Sony, as the company has moved almost the entire camera production from China to Thailand. According to the reports, this is due to two main factors. First, it’s due to the intensifying conflict between China and the U.S. And second, due to China’s “zero covid” policy.
Sony is a Japan-based company selling its cameras worldwide, producing them in factories in Asia and Europe. Most of the manufacturer’s cameras have been produced in China to be distributed across Asia, the U.S., and Europe, but these have now switched to a factory in Thailand. As Nikkei reports, Sony’s factories in China now make products that will be distributed only across this country. However, the company plans to continue supplying lenses made in China outside of the country.
The same source notes that Sony sold about 2.11 million cameras worldwide in 2022 alone. 150,000 of these were distributed across China, and over 90% were made to be sold in Japan, the U.S., and Europe. “In response to the conflict between the United States and China, the transfer to the United States was carried out first,” Nikkei writes, “and the transfer to Japan and Europe was also completed by the end of 2022.” [via Canon Watch]
