The chip supply shortage has caused chaos in the tech industry. Naturally, camera manufacturers haven’t been spared – and Sony is the latest one to announce the temporary suspension of several cameras. Sony has stopped producing a7 II and a6100, and it has stopped taking orders for a7C, a6400, a6600, and ZV-E10.
Sony Japan issued a statement on its website on 23 December, citing “global semiconductor shortages” as the reason for product suspension:
Sony suspended the orders of these same cameras in November and earlier this month. However, the company didn’t stop their production at the time. At the time of the announcement on 19 November, the a7 II and the a6100 were designated as a “product subject to suspension of order acceptance.” But Sony writes that there’s “no prospect of future parts supply,” so the production ceased on 23 December and no one knows when it shall start again. You can still order the a7 II and the a6100 on B&H though, so if you planned to buy them… You better hurry. Currently, with regard to digital imaging products, parts procurement is delayed due to the effects of global semiconductor shortages. Therefore, we will suspend the acceptance of orders from our distributors and customers at the Sony store as follows for specific models with tight supply. In addition, we will inform you as follows because there is a change in the supply status of some products that are subject to suspension of order acceptance. Suspension of order acceptance We will consider resuming order acceptance of the target product while observing the status of parts supply, and will separately inform you on the product information page.
