Canon has teased some more information about the upcoming Canon EOS R3 mirrorless camera. While not expected to ultimately be the highest-end model in Canon’s mirrorless lineup, the EOS R3 is expected to be a pretty high-end camera aimed at sports, wildlife and action shooters as well as photojournalists. And while the majority of its users will no doubt be photographers, it seems it’s no slouch for video, either. The latest news coming from Canon is that it’ll shoot oversampled 4K video for maximum detail and will offer up to 8 stops of image stabilisation when used in conjunction with a stabilised lens. It will, naturally, feature dual card slots, with one being CFexpress (presumably Type B) and one SD slot (presumably UHS-II).
A number of the camera’s autofocus features are being shown off in the latest announcement, which utilises Deep Learning technology. This, Canon says, will result in “even better face, eye, head and animal body detection”. It will also feature vehicle subject recognition and tracking for both cars and motorcycles – ideal for those motorsports photographers.
It’ll also be able to focus in extreme low light conditions, Canon says. All the way down to -7EV, along with 8 stops of image stabilisation when used in conjunction with an optically stabilised RF mount lens – presumably this means you won’t get quite the same level of stabilisation performance when using adapted EF mount lenses. When it comes to the video features, Canon says that “the upcoming EOS R3 will be able to shoot 4K video with Canon Log 3 support, oversampled 4K, and RAW movie internal recording” and a flippy out LCD for when you need to film yourself.
As far as connectivity goes, the EOS R3 will feature both 5Ghz WiFi capability built-in and it’ll also have an RJ45 socket for wired ethernet with even faster transfers for those journalists working in the field who need to get images back to base as quickly as possible. A new accessory shoe, Canon says, will provide further options for data communication as well as power. Additional Specifications Include:
