DJI has announced their newest handheld smartphone gimbal, the DJI Osmo Mobile 6. Over its predecessor, DJI says that it comes with a larger clamp for supporting the ridiculously large smartphones that companies seem to be releasing these days (for real, how big do they think our pockets are?) along with a new Quick Launch feature as well as the updated Active Track 5.0 subject tracking features. A new built-in status panel allows you to quickly see and set your mode – of which there are four – as well as being able to easily keep an eye on your battery levels. A new Side Wheel allows you to adjust zoom and focus without touching your phone while the more powerful motors help to keep your smartphone’s camera steadier than previous Osmo Mobile gimbals.

Weighing only 340g (including the phone clamp), the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is a lightweight gimbal with a compact foldable design that lets you easily store it in large pockets or small pouches on a backpack or other bag. As with previous Osmo Mobile gimbals, the Osmo Mobile 6 also features the magnetic mount for attaching the clip that holds your smartphone to the gimbal, allowing for fast deployment when the mood strikes to film something. As well as being able to quickly film what’s going on around you, the DJI Mimo app also provides gesture control, allowing you to easily photograph yourself or start and stop recording video. Other shooting features include Timelapse, DynamicZoom, Panorama and Story Mode. when it comes to actual gimbal modes, you get four. Follow mode, Tilt Lock mode, FPV mode and SpinShot mode.

The new Quick Launch feature automatically fires up the DJI Mimo app as soon as you unfold it and snap-in your paired smartphone on the magnetic mount. This is a pretty neat feature that allows you to get shooting very quickly as soon as you decide you want to. I’ve seen this feature on other devices before, like when you connect the Autel Evo Nano drone (review here) controller to your smartphone automatically fires up the app to get you up and shooting sooner and it sure beats having to hunt through a whole mess of icons to find the right one!

The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is available to buy now for $159 from the DJI website (£145 in the UK) and includes the gimbal itself, magnetic smartphone clamp, tripod, power cable and storage pouch. It should be coming to all of the usual retailers soon. There’s also an Osmo Mobile 6 Vlog Combo that includes everything above as well as the DJI Mic 2 person wireless microphones for a total of $488. Unfortunately, this combo price doesn’t present a price break and costs the same as simply buying the two items separately.
