No matter what brand of camera you prefer, there’s a good chance a 24–70mm f/2.8 lens is available for the mount. It’s one of the most versatile pieces of glass out there and almost every company manufacturers some variation of it. To put four of these variations to the test, Camera Store TV created a video review showing and explaining how the 24–70mm lenses from Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax stack up to one another. The lenses tested throughout the video include Canons 24–70 L, Nikkor’s 24–70, Sony’s new G Master 24–70 and Pentax’s 24–70 DFA. Testing of these lenses was done alongside photographer Jeremy Fokkens on-location at Crowsnest Pass in Alberta, Canada. At 17-minutes long, you might have to set it aside to watch in its entirety. According to their testing and subsequent research into the image files, each lens seemed to excel in niche areas. Sony’s G-series lens won for best bokeh and sharpest images, but the autofocus seemed to perform poorly. The Pentax variation didn’t do so hot across the board, but it’s far more affordable than the competitors. Nikkor’s version hit the spot when it came to macro images and vibration reduction (VR). Canon’s iteration seemed to walk right down the middle in terms of price and performance. Overall, the comprehensive review was great for seeing how different companies are doing compared to one another when it comes to building a lens with almost identical specifications.
