3D printed cameras are a lot of fun, and something I was planning to make a bunch of this year before we were told we weren’t allowed to go out and play. But despite most of us not being able to get out to shoot our cameras right now, it hasn’t stopped people developing new ones. You might remember Dora Goodman, creator of the Goodman One 3D printed medium format camera. Well, now she’s back with the Scura, a new open-source 3D printed curved panoramic pinhole camera.
The Scura shoots 35mm film and allows you to create 60x25mm super-wide panoramic photos. And thanks to a curved film plane, it allows you to do it with virtually no distortion.
Like the Goodman One, the Scura is designed to be easily printable by just about anybody with a 3D printer and all of the designs are freely available on Goodman’s website. This means you can customise and modify it to your own personal tastes if you think you can find a way to improve upon it. Goodman says that the Scura is a “light and powerful camera that is fun and easy to build”, and offers online guides to help with its construction. If you don’t have access to a 3D printer, the Scura is also available as a DIY kit that includes all of the printed parts, hardware and tools required for assembly.
