The Sony A6400 is a camera of choice for many vloggers: it has good video features, a flip screen, and retails at a reasonable price. However, if you want to add an external microphone to it, you either have to rig it on the side of the camera, or it will completely block the screen when you flip it. In this video, Jason Vong will show you a simple and dirt cheap solution that will let you mount a microphone on top of your camera for cleaner sound without blocking the screen.
Jason uses a SmallRig Cold Shoe Relocation Plate, which is made for the Sony a6300 and the a6400. As the name suggests, it lets you relocate your external microphone so it doesn’t block the screen when you tilt it 180° up. The relocation plate locks via the hot shoe and the shoulder strap hole of camera, moving the hot shoe for your mic to the right side. It comes with rubber pad on the bottom for protecting the original hot shoe. For additional security, you can attach it to the side of the camera with provided screws. This relocation plate is tiny and lightweight, so it won’t take up much space in your gear bag or when you attach it to the camera. It doesn’t block the dials, and it makes sure that your mic doesn’t block the screen. The only downside is that it moves the microphone further away from the mic port, so if you want to flip the screen down, you need to fiddle with the cord. Still, I think this is a very simple, yet clever solution for mounting the mic to the top of your Sony a6300 or a6400. It’s currently available for preorders and it currently costs only $14.
