Okay, we all know that you can turn your fancy Fuji, Sony, Canon, Nikon, and other cameras into a webcam. But can you do it with something that is the opposite of fancy: a Game Boy camera? Well, yes, you can! Bernard Capulong aka berndog turned his game Boy camera into a fully functional webcam, and it’s as amazing as it is ridiculous.

The whole thing started with a post on r/Gameboy/ subreddit. User eye_for_an_homunculi asked if it was possible to use a Game Boy camera as a webcam, and Bernard was “destined to answer this question in the nerdiest way imaginable.” He actually did it and created a sample video he took with a freakin’ Game Boy camera as a web camera. How awesome and geeky is that?

Bernard starts the description of his process with “Step 1: don’t,” which made me laugh. But no really, think twice because it’s very impractical and expensive. But in case you want to experiment with it, you’ll need:

A Game Boy camera (obviously)A Game Boy camera cartridgeA Super Game Boy 2 cartridgeAnalogue Super Nt OR Super Nintendo/Super Famicom with an upscaler like a Retrotink possiblyCapture cardExternal microphone

Bernard used his brilliantly ridiculous (or ridiculously brilliant) setup for Streamlabs OBS and Zoom. In the video above, you can see a converted recording from a Zoom meeting.
