People do put GoPros in some strange places. This one is courtesy of the Matt Mikka at Warped Perception. When Matt decided that he needed to change the tire on his car, he thought “hey, why don’t I stick a GoPro in here while it’s open and see how that looks from the inside as I drive?”. So, that’s exactly what he did. Inside the rim, Matt mounted a GoPro Hero 7 Black with an LED light so you could actually see what was going on in there, along with a Mophie power bank to supply everything with power. The camera shows a fixed point inside the wheel, and he drives fairly slowly, but it kinda reminds me of a beating heart – except without all the blood.
As well as driving, we also get to see how it looks from inside the tire when it’s being fitted back onto the rim, as well as how it looks when the air’s let out again in order to remove the tire to get the GoPro and associated bits back out (that’s actually a pretty cool sequence at the end). But driving is where it really gets interesting.
Because the camera is in a fixed position inside the rim, we don’t see anything really spinning or rotating, except for a few bits of debris regularly flying past the camera as gravity does its thing. But each rotation of the wheel, that one section of the tire goes flat, and it does it with such regularity that it almost looks like it’s “beating”, like a heart. It’s impressive how well the GoPro (not to mention the power bank) holds up to the 35-45 PSI pressure inside the tire, too. That’s the equivalent to the pressure of being around 25-30 metres (80-100 feet) underwater.
